Swearing on the Qur’an

Newly elected democratic representative from Minnesota says he will not take his oath of office on the Bible. Instead, Keith Ellison will use an English translation of the Qur’an once owned by Thomas Jefferson. Ellison, born in Detroit, converted to Islam in college and believes that this bold move should make the point that “religious differences are nothing to be afraid of.”

Truthfully, I’m glad that Ellison, the first Muslim Congressman, has made this decision. The Bible means nothing to him so an oath taken upon it would also mean nothing. I wonder what most of the “Christian” congressmen and congresswomen would do if they came to this position in a “Muslim” nation. I’m afraid that for most their religious beliefs are so superfluous that they would gladly swear upon a document that is contradictory to their stated beliefs in order to avoid controversy.

Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying that Ellison’s beliefs will save him because he is genuine. Islam is a false religion, it’s god is a myth, and it’s truths will not save. Still lessons can be learned from the devotion of others to their beliefs. What do you think about his decision?
