Today in History: February 7

I’ve always liked history, so I regularly visit sites that give history facts and trivia. One of my favorites is to see what happened today in history. It’s really fun to look at your birthday or anniversary. But here’s just a sample of today’s events. Dates and Events by Scope Systems.

1905 - Oklahoma admitted to statehood

This is my favorite musical of all time. The 1950’s movie is good, but the best I’ve seen features Hugh Jackman (Wolverine from the X-Men movies). You can learn more about it here.

1935 - Monopoly was invented by Charles Darrow who was the inspiration for Rich Uncle Pennybags

I love board games. One of my favorites is Monopoly. I never get to play it though, because Teresa and I get too competitive and it ends up taking like 4 days to play a full game all of which I spend sleeping on the couch. They just released a new version called Monopoly: Here and Now. Basically all of the properties are updated to match today’s landmarks. For a neat online tour of the game board, go here.

1964 - Cassius Clay becomes a Muslim & adopts the name Muhammad Ali

Cassius Clay (aka. Muhammad Ali) is arguably the greatest boxer of all time. If he didn’t fight so well, he would have been a magnificent poet. Recently there was a book by George Lois called ALI RAP and an ESPN production of the same name which features dozens of celebrities sharing some amazing quotes by “The Greatest.” You can find the book or DVD on my Amazon Store, or you might be able to see a re-run of the ESPN program. Nevertheless, you can read more about the theory that Ali invented Rap here.

1974 - Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles” opens in movie theaters

One of the best and most racially charged comedies of all time, Mel Brooks hits a homerun. I remember watching this movie for the first time with my dad and not understanding any of the racial references but still thinking it was hilarious because of all the physical comedy. I particularly love the scene where newly appointed Sheriff Bart takes himself hostage … Do what he say!!! Do what he say!!! … Priceless. See some great clips on YouTube here.
