Sydney Pollack 1934-2008

I know that I’m a few days late posting this, but I wanted to go back and watch some of his movies to better appreciate him as a greatly accomplished Oscar-winning director, producer, and actor. While I love Tootsie and thoroughly enjoyed last year’s Michael Clayton. I believe I will best remember Sydney Pollack for this PSA which still makes me laugh.

Pollack died Monday afternoon, surrounded by family, at his home. It was a 10 month battle with cancer that claimed him, he was 73.

Out of Africa was his masterpiece. It had the feel of an epic, a wonderful score, beautiful cinematography and two accomplished stars, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, in the leads. The film was nominated for 11 awards, winning seven including Best Picture and Director.

Some of his other well known films were, Tootsie, The Way we Were, The Firm, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Cold Mountain, and Absence of Malice. As George Clooney said of his friend: “Sydney made the world a little better, movies a little better, and even dinner a little better. A tip of the hat to a class act. He’ll be missed terribly.”
